Category: Comets

Comets are small celestial bodies composed primarily of ice, dust, and rocky material that originate from the outer regions of the solar system. They are often characterized by their bright glowing comas and long tails, which develop as they approach the Sun. The heat from the Sun causes the ice within the comet to vaporize, releasing gas and dust that form the coma, a cloud of material surrounding the nucleus of the comet. The solar wind and radiation pressure then push this material away from the Sun, creating the characteristic tail that always points away from the Sun, regardless of the comet’s trajectory. Comets typically have highly elliptical orbits that bring them close to the Sun and then take them back to the outer solar system. They are considered to be remnants from the early solar system, containing primitive materials that provide insight into the conditions and processes that existed during its formation. Comets are often named after their discoverers or based on their appearance or orbit.
