Tag: Cygnus Cargo Ship

The Cygnus Cargo Ship is an automated spacecraft developed by Northrop Grumman (formerly Orbital ATK) for NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services program. Its primary function is to transport cargo to the International Space Station (ISS). Cygnus is designed to carry supplies, equipment, and scientific experiments to support the ongoing operations and research conducted aboard the ISS. The spacecraft is launched atop an Antares rocket from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Virginia. Upon arrival at the ISS, Cygnus is grappled by the station’s robotic arm and attached to a docking port, allowing astronauts to unload its contents. After completing its mission, Cygnus can be filled with trash and safely deorbited, burning up upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. The ship is notable for its ability to deliver significant payloads and has undergone various iterations, with improvements made based on previous missions.
